Dr. Velazco recently sent an update that highlighted the importance of family to the girls at the Round Home. This is a key value throughout the reintegration process. In order to care for the girls holistically we must also care for the family. Below is an excerpt form Dr. Velazco's most recent update:

...The number one value held by all of them, without exception, is family togetherness, peace and happiness, followed by other laudable values that have also been formed.

The number one motivation is also family. This gives us an idea what to work towards. This is also a very strong argument for reintegration. By this we are made aware that if we want to care for the child holistically, we also need to care for the family. The restoration that we need to do might be 50% in the safehome and 50% in the context of the original home. If the family is not yet suitable, then one of our challenges and tasks is to make it so.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which stresses that all efforts must be done to care for  the child in the context of the family, might be wiser than originally thought by many organizations...

The other day I asked each of the girls to imagine herself in the bubble of her dreams and there surround herself with the things that she wants most in life.

Here are some of what they said:

"What is inside the bubble is simple – my complete family living in peace and joy."

"I’m home. My family is complete and happy. I have a good job. I am also healthy. I have had trials, but now all my dreams are fulfilled."

"I’m home with my happy family."

"This one is my home where all my parents and siblings are all together and happy and have good food."

"A garden is inside the bubble. There is also a house. My father, mother, siblings, grandparents, and plants are there. We are having a picnic. There is a swimming pool."

"My family is whole again. I have finished my studies. I have a job. My brother and uncle are out of prison. I am now a doctor. We have a house of our own."

"I am doing family counseling because I am a family counselor. I am emphasizing cooperation, commitment, caring, and communication within the family."

We look forward to the day when all these dreams for the future are a reality.
